History of Osteopathic Medicine
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine was founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, DO.
Dr. Still developed osteopathic medicine in Kirksville, Missouri after becoming dissatisfied with many conventional medical practices of the time. He believed that the body has an innate ability to heal itself and that proper structure and alignment of the musculoskeletal system are essential for optimal function and health.
In 1892, he went on to establish the first osteopathic medical school, the American School of Osteopathy (now known as A.T. Still University).
OMT has since evolved with modern medical science, but it remains grounded in Dr. Still’s original philosophy:
Structure and function are interrelated, and the body has the capacity for self-healing.
